Bits and Pieces

Elayna gave Katie kisses the other day. It was adorable. Katie had gotten hurt, and was crying. Elayna leaned over, and with an open mouth, gave Katie 2 kisses on her cheek.

Elayna was playing "got your nose" with her finger on my nose. She would point at and touch my nose with her pointer finger, then laugh when I said, "Oh no! You got my nose!"

Ryan tilled my garden and I got it planted. We have cucumbers, tomatoes, cantaloupe, peppers (red, yellow, and Anaheim) peas, beans, radishes, onions, zucchini, and yellow squash. I'm way excited. They all seem to be doing well. I don't know why it is so amazing to see beans and peas come up from plain dirt, but it is awesome!

I had a nice Mother's Day. Ryan got me beautiful flowers for my pots in front of my house. He also went "garden" shopping with me to find all the vegs I wanted. Katie and Elayna got me some gardening gloves, some Katie-sized gardening gloves, and some fingernail polish I could share with the girls. It was a nice day. I love being a mother. It is definitely the most fulfilling thing I could possibly be doing right now.

Alisha visited Utah for a week. It was great. We love having her here. Her son Ethan is just adorable. It will be so fabulous to have our reunion in July when all my siblings and their families come for the weekend at my parent's house. We have a ball.

Elayna says Dada (and knows who she is talking about). She also says KT and looks for Katie when saying it. She has said Mama, but I don't think she has a clue what it means. :)

Elayna went for her 9 month check-up. She is 25.5 inches tall, and weighs 18.6 pounds. Everything else is great. She is eating more "real" food, and she hasn't had an allergic reaction to anything she has eaten recently. She has a fabulous sense of humor. She loves going to bed at the same time each night. Her nighttime feeding schedule varies most nights, but at least I know she wants to be in bed by 7:30 each night. She will sleep about 12 hours, only waking to eat 2-3 times. Bleh. I'm about ready to be done with nighttime feedings.

I started running again. Mom, Amanda, and I want to train for a half marathon in August up in Logan, Utah. We took a couple of weeks off after the race, and I can sure feel it. If I didn't know better, I would think I've never run before. It is silly, but I feel like I'm starting at the beginning all over again.

Katie is such a wonderful girl. She is so happy and helpful. She loves Elayna so much. Those 2 girls just giggle when they see each other. I hope they always love each other this much.

Half marathon

For those of you that don't know, my mother and I ran a half marathon on Saturday May 2. Well, run is a loose description, since I walked quite a bit of it.
It was down in Hurricane, which is by St George, Utah.

This is my Uncle John, my cousin David, my mom, Chad and Lisa Rowley, and Me after the race was over:

This race was pretty hard on me. I have been training since January, and we have done long runs for about 6 weeks in a row. We started out with 6 miles, then increased by a mile each week. The most we ever went was 11 miles, but I felt fairly confident that this race wouldn't be much different than our practice runs.

I stayed up with my Mom until about mile 7 or 8 (it all kinda blurs together). We were making great time, since we did the first 6 miles in 54 minutes. That calculates to 9 minute miles. Impressive for us. At about mile 8, the road started going downhill fast. As in, there were markers for trucks that warned there was a 6 or 8% grade. This downhill part lasted about 2.5 miles. As we went down it, I needed to walk, so Mom pulled ahead. I was feeling sorry for myself (I was soo tired!) and started to kinda cry. This caused me to start hyperventilating, which, you know, isn't a good thing.
If anyone would have driven by, or asked how I was doing at that point, I know I would have given up. But, luckily, no one came by so I had to keep going. I got over my self pity and started running again. I walked quite a bit of the last 5 miles. But at the last mile, Mom waited for me, and we came in together. Thanks Mom! I really needed encouragement at that point.

My mom and I were saying hi to Katie in this picture:

We came in at about 2 hours 50 minutes. I think there might have been 4 or 5 people that finished after me. :( But, I am grateful that I can say I finished!

I have wondered why I was so tired, and I have come up with this theory: During our long practice runs, we brought fruit snacks or Gu. (kinda like honey, with caffeine. It helps keep your energy up) We would eat these about every 3 miles. Well, on the race, they had water and Gatorade every 3 miles. That's it. I thought they would have sustenance, or else I would have brought my own. Oh well. Live and Learn.

Overall, I would say it was a good experience. I'm glad we did it. We are planning on doing another half marathon in August. The good news is: My time can only get better! :)

April 2009

This is what I like to call "Elayna's happy dance".

She does this when she wakes up; when she sees me, or Ryan, or Katie. Sometimes at night, she will nurse until she falls asleep, then wake up to burp. When I lay her on her blanket, she will do her happy dance, I'll wrap her up, and she will fall back asleep. She will also do this dance when she wants to be picked up, or when she is excited for anything. Too cute.

Elayna says "Da da" and gives a HUGE smile when she sees her dad. It is so Cute! Also, Ryan and her were "hiding" under a blanket from me. As I grew closer, saying "Elayna, where are you?" she was just giggling and squirming all over. Adorable. Today she was chewing on my chin and smiling. At first I couldn't figure out why, then I remembered that I like to tickle her under her chin, and on her chin bone. She was trying to tickle me!

Katie is so smart. I have to lock my computer so she doesn't get on it without my permission. She can get on the computer, find the bookmark of the game she wants to play, and she can play games or videos on about 3 different sites. She even recognizes some letters and numbers (either from playing them so often, or because she is smart. I'm going with the smart theory.) so she can "win" the games. Amazing.

Ryan has a pin that he has been wearing on his shirt the last couple of days. Katie saw a picture of the design on the pin and proceeded to tell me "that's Daddy's new pin? He wears that on his shirt. It has a little thing for it will not poke Daddy." (the back of the pin) She just remembers things so well. She asked Irma if she could play with Irma's little guitar. The last time Katie saw that guitar was at Christmas, and it was only for about 1/2 hour. Then, out of the blue, she remembers it, and wants to play with it. Sometimes it really scares me how much she can recall.

The girls have so much fun playing together. This is a short example:

And Elayna has just figured out how to crawl. She has been working on it for so long! She finally has gotten it down. This video is from May 1. Every day she just gets better and better. She'll be racing around the room soon.
